Trains and boats…no planes…
We took the overnight Stena Line boat from Belfast to Liverpool, the train from Liverpool to London after disembarking in the morning and the Eurostar from London to Amsterdam that afternoon. We checked into the Ibis hotel near the station and spent most of the next day in Amsterdam. A visit to the Reichsmuseum, followed by a three-course lunch in the Museum's restaurant; an afternoon stroll along the canals before a light meal at the hotel where we collected our suitcases and walked a couple of hundred metres to the station to catch the Night Train to Innsbruck. The following morning, we took a train through the Brenner Pass to Bosen/Bolzano.
We love the Dolomites, and we love organising trips to wine regions for fellow members of the Northern Ireland Wine And Spirit Institute - NIWSI. Researching and planning our 2027 trip to the wine region Sud Tirol/Alto Adige was the pleasing purpose of our trip. We spent a week visiting hotels and coach companies and winemakers, and had enough spare time to explore the lovely towns and the surrounding mountains.
We returned via Schaffhausen in Switzerland - train to Innsbruck, where we spent a night, then train to Winterthur in Switzerland and then Schaffhausen, where we spent a few days with friends. Then train to Zurich, then Paris where we spent a couple of leisurely days before taking the Eurostar back to London, then train to Liverpool and overnight boat back to Belfast.
How was it? Mostly wonderful, except for the Night Train from Amsterdam to Innsbruck. Our cabin had bunks. Richard gallantly took the top bunk. He is tall. The bunk was short, with not much space between the bunk and the ceiling. When he turned over he almost banged his head. His toes were touching the cabin wall. He got almost no sleep. I woke several times in my bunk, but I had the window and could raise the blind and see the starry sky.
Were we to do this journey again, we would book a three-person cabin which has two beds at corridor level.
