Sunday Sequence 12th July
The surprising thing about the site of the Battle of the Boyne is how narrow the river is at that point. I had always envisaged a wide, fast-flowing river which provided a defence for the Irish and French Catholic troops led by King James against the opposing army of English, Scottish, Dutch, Danish and French Protestants, led by William of Orange. Instead, I found a narrow, fairly shallow river - little more than a stream at this point. William marked victory by crossing the Boyne at Oldbridge - about a mile from Oldbridge House - now the Interpretative Centre at the battlefield.
