About trees
I left Belfast in 1984 and came back in 2014. I was struck by how green the city had become in the intervening years. Trees had been planted in streets and avenues where there had been none before. Trees that in my memory were unremarkable, time had made majestic.
"I can measure my life in trees.
An avenue of limes, small
Like me when planted years
Ago now grown so tall
They almost touch the sky.
I walk beneath them, raise my eyes
To heaven. Wondering when and why….."
